The management of the “ Cannes Film Festival ” announced that the French film “Jean de Paris” was chosen to open the activities of the 76th session , which will be held from May 16 to 27 next. The “Grand Lumiere Hall”, at the Palais des Festivals, on the Croisette Beach, will witness its world premiere. The film is directed by Frenchwoman Mayon (1976), who in her new film plays the main character opposite the American star Johnny Depp. In collaboration with Benjamin La Vergne, Melville Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Gregory, and India Hare.
The historical film deals with the rise and fall of King Louis XV, played by Johnny Depp. And the aspirations of the young Jeanne du Barry, born the illegitimate daughter of a poor seamstress in 1743. Jeanne belongs par excellence to the working class. She is very intelligent, attractive and charming, and thirsts for culture and fun. The young woman uses her queens to climb the social ladder, one by one, until she enters the court of King Louis XV, and even becomes his favorite mistress. The king is ignorant of her ambitions and her reality as a playful woman, but with her he regains his appetite for life. They fall madly in love. Then Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival sparks a major scandal. She ends up being the last official mistress of the king, who sparked a lot of controversy at the time, especially with the church, because of his relationships, marriages, and behavior.
It is noteworthy that in 2011, director Mayon won the “Jury Prize” at the “Cannes” Festival , in her first selection in the “official competition”, for her film “Police”. Then, four years later, the director returned to participate again in the “official competition” with the movie “Malaki,” which won the “Best Actress” award for Frenchwoman Emmanuelle Bercot in the role of “Marie.”
Scorsese returns
The film “The Killers of the Rose of the Moon,” by the great American Martin Scorsese, is considered the most awaited and anticipated cinematic event at the Cannes Festival this year, on more than one level. “The Killers of the Moonflower” brings the director back to the festival 37 years after his last participation in the “official competition,” which was with the dark comedy “After Hours” (1986). Scorsese, who is now eighty years old, won the Palme de Cannes in 1976 for his masterpiece “Taxi Driver.” He assumed the presidency of the arbitration committee in 1998.
“The Moonflower Killers,” written jointly with Eric Roth and David Grann, is a Western film, and adapted from a book by David Grann with the same title. The film will be shown next Saturday, May 20, in the presence of the director and the film crew, led by the two main heroes, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. The film will be shown in cinemas around the world for a limited time next October. This was before it was shown on the Apple network platform for subscribers only.
In the title role, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Detective Ernest Burkhart, who uncovers a group of mysterious crimes. This is the seventh collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, which co-stars with star Robert De Niro, playing the character “William Hale,” the main driver behind these crimes. This is the tenth time that De Niro has acted in a film directed by Scorsese. This is the fourth time that De Niro and DiCarpio have acted in one film.
Almodóvar's presence
The festival also announced a new show by Spaniard Pedro Almodovar , “A Strange Way of Life,” as part of “Special Shows” (outside of competition). “A Strange Way of Life”, short film, 40 minutes. The director is scheduled to attend with the film's heroes, Ethan Hawke, Pedro Pascal and Anthony Vaccarello. The film is a Western, and tells the story of a man named “Silva,” a farmer who rides a horse across the desert to visit a friend who has become the sheriff of the police department in one of the towns in the American West, in order to reunite him with a friend of his youth. Where they worked together as hired killers. They celebrate their meeting after separation. But the next morning, the police officer tells him a surprise. The film is Almodovar's first English-speaking work, and it stars American stars.
Another highly anticipated film, which the festival organizers hope will attract the attention of young people and other fans of this type of film, is the new Hollywood film “Indiana Jones and the Connection of Destiny” by James Mangold. It is the latest film in this series. The film's heroes and stars, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, and Mad Mikkelsen, are expected to attend.
Animation at the end
This year's festival is scheduled to conclude with the animated film “Elemental.” The latest productions of Disney/Pixar Studios. The film revolves around the friendship that arises between the bold, quick-witted, and strong-willed young woman, Flam, and the emotional, amusing boy, Flack, in the city of “Element City,” whose population consists of fire, air, and water.
The festival has previously selected three Pixar films as part of its programs. “Up” in 2009, and it was the first animated film to open the cinematic event. And “Inside Out” in 2015. And “Soul” in the 2020 edition, which was canceled due to Corona.
The film “Elemental” will be shown outside the “official competition” . Note that its commercial showings in American cinemas are scheduled for next June 16. The film's director, Peter Son, and Pixar president Pete Docter will attend the film's screening at the festival, whose management has chosen actress Chiara Mastroianni to present the opening and closing ceremonies of this year's edition.
